Dave Salyers

I thought of some more so here goes.

26. Attended Grossmont College after High School but dropped out and joined the army in 1964.
27. Went to basic training @ Ft. Ord Ca. and then off to Ft. Gordon Georgia for training in the Signal Corp.
28. Was engaged to be married to Anna Mae Cunningham before I left (ring and all).
29. Graduated from signal school and immediately went to New York and boarded a Troop Ship for Germany.
30. Stayed in Germany for 21/2 years and re-trained as a radio, radio teletype operator with a Top Secret clearance.
31. In the summer of 1965 I got a "Dear John" letter.
32. The Army wanted me to re-enlist and offered me thousands of dollars and a promotion to Sergeant but hey this was 1967 by then. (Do you remember Viet Nam?) I said no thanks and came home to El Cajon.
33. My mother talked a girl (Martha) into writing to me and, that went on for a year before I was discharged from the Army. (I had never met her)
34. Discharged in Jan 67 married Martha in June 67. She has kept me around all this time.
35. Went to work for Food Basket super market and worked for them 7 years.
36. Went to work for Frito Lay Company for 5 years.
37. Started my own business and went bankrupt.
38. Re-trained as a welder/ship fitter.
39. Worked in the ship yards for till 1984. (And I loved It)!
40. Went to work for Navy Public Works and made it to a supervisor position.
41. They paid me to retire in 2005.
42. Martha and I had been exploring places to retire for 10 years and fell in love with the Prescott Az. area. At 5,000 feet it is a beautiful mild 3 season’s climate.
43. I am raising my grandson Jared who is now 13. We gained custody of him when he was 6. He has ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome and is in special education because of his behavioral/social skills problems. He could not read four years ago when we arrived in Prescott but, through the great schools here he is thriving. So far this year (school starts in early Aug.)He is getting straight A on his progress report.
44. I worked for a few months for Home Depot after the move and remembered why I quit Food Basket. (Retail stinks)
45. The day after I quit I was offerd a job as manager of Prescott Steel and worked there 3 years and retired again last August.

Ok, that's enough for now but, if you have any questions let me know.

Dave

RULES: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note in the Message Forum with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose someone else from the reunion website to be tagged. If I tagged you, it’s because I want to know more about you.

1. I got drunk one time in my mid 20’s and haven’t had a drink since. ……because I don’t like not being in control, only drink I ever liked was sweet – and honestly – I do not need alcohol to be nuts!

2. I hate being dizzy – and have never gone on the T-Cups at Disneyland (which is my 2nd home).

3. When I was about five I dug up worms (ICK) and sold to neighbors (3 for a nickel) for Christmas money. My mom about died and walked with me to refund the money – so they gave me more! (good grief)
4. My sister and I tried to “dig to China” when I was probably 7 (she was 13) and dug a deeeeppp hole, which was really awesome, except we didn’t’ mention it to my dad – and he almost fell in it. YEP bye bye hole. (honestly I was SOOOO sure we could dig to China).
5. I HATE HATE HATE SNAKES! I AM TERRIIED OF THEM – PICTURES, RUBBER DOESN’T MATTER – IF YOU WANT TO WATCH ME FLIP UP SHOW UP WITH A SNAKE ---------- REAL OR NOT!
6. I am a bit of an endorphin junkie. Bungee jumped – and plan to parachute (tandem) when I’m 65 next year.
7. I have anything but a green thumb!
8. I played the flute and piccolo and once I could play the passage from a John Phillip Sousa piece – I quit!
9. Saw Elvis in concert three times –and actually got a kiss once. (sighhh).
10. Kathy Robinson and I (and others whom I won’t name because they won’t own up to it) changed the “G” to and “E” on the Grossmont hill the night before the big game. My only claim to anything illegal. (heck we just thought it was funny).
11. I am a Star Wars fan – went to the 12:01 am showing of the last three and yes – was in line a lonnnnggg time! (with my son and daughter-in-law joining me).
12. I broke so many bones in school I was in adaptive gym a lot – what a klutz and with that
13. Got married the first time, in a cast as I broke my foot three weeks before my wedding. Had a walking cast and a heel on the other foot so no one (except the wedding party and family) knew, until Dr. Garrett came through the line and asked me to lift up my dress a bit – he thought I’d found a way to get it off…………which did cross my mind.
14. I loved school – and especially drama and Keith Richards.
15. I love to travel
16. Favorite music – is oldies, Christian, Broadway, and R and B.
17. I still talk too much.
18. I have nearly zero artistic ability.
19. My sister, mom and stepdad all died in ’85 within three months and my faith in God grew by leaps and bounds. Death is sad because we miss our loved ones – but we have to focus on the fact that they are home with the Lord and we will join them one day.
20. Am an avid Charger, Padre and USC fan – and a big fan of Jimmy Johnson. (ok maybe that isn’t surprising).
21. I never reached five feet.
22. I am so thankful for my friends of so many years who are always there for me and put up with me. I love them all and know that they are a blessing.
23. I’ve made mistakes – but have learned from them and think they have helped me be a better person.
24. Love going to see stage shows.
25. I am thankful my husband and I have lived to enjoy retirement together and praise God for all His blessings.

James Glenn Parks

Ok then . . . as the old TV show said: "Remember, you asked for it!" Thanks, Hazel dear - I guess . . . .

I promise the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I am gonna take cues from some of your responses just for fun. There will be no ordering in my list for importance, date/time or appropriate content #:'

AND, I will reach out and tag Susan Sparks!

1. Dave, I too love cooking and watching cooking shows. I have followed Graham Kerr from his wino days to his current eating right themes. I AM the 1992 Utah State Fair SPAM cookoff champion. I won with "Spam Wellington" which thing was totally awesome. I was also asked to guest on two TV News at Noon cooking segments.

2. Darlene, I used to drink also. I started in the Oil Patch during a flying stint there where I turned my back on my religion for a number of years. Thanks to my amazing wife of 9 years, I am back where I started - sober and thankful to be alive! In the aforementioned TV appearance, I was nervous. At the time I drove a VW Van . . . sans flower power stuff, but with a fully equipped bar! Just before walking into the building, I built a mondo screw driver and slammed it! The result was soon very relaxing. I still have the segment on tape. It shows me cutting some pie crust dough with a knife, dropping the knife, and bending over OUT of the camera view to pick up the knife! Me and Graham Kerr, baby!

3. I am also a Christian, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or commonly known as Mormons. My mother's family pulled hand carts over the plains to settle in Utah. I deeply regret the wasted, dangerous years I spent not practicing my religion. I am amazed at what Jesus did for me so that I might come back and be happy. My name is engravened on His palms, as is yours.

4. Seeing a theatrical performance of Les Miserables in the 90's was the start of a pivot point in my life. It had a profound effect on me. I still cry when playing the sound track.

5. Is there a more polished male voice that Gary Morris? In my small opinion . . . no! His performance in Le Miz was extraordinary. It is the Los Angeles company with Gary that I have the sound track to. I have been back stage with him, Michael Martin Murphy and Willie.

6. Never got into Elvis or any 50's or 60's music, save be for folk music. I played the Banjo, had a little folk group just for fun, and was way into the Kingston Trio, The Brothers Four, The Highwaymen, The New Christy Minstrels, Peter, Paul et al . . . you get the picture.

7. My MP3 playlist today includes: Bonnie Raitt, Coldplay, Alan Jackson, Green Day, Dwight Yoakam, Georgia Satellites, Elton John, Loverboy, Alison Krauss, Boston, Kenny Chesney, Poison, Foo Fighters, Uncle Kracker, Led Kaapana & Friends (bonus points for genre here) Jon Schmidt, Enya and more. . . a mixed bag for sure, and all loved and enjoyed often.

8. Rode in the cab of Union Pacific's Challenger 3985 from Wyoming to Utah. Worked on that ride for two years! It was hot, noisy, smelly, dirty and erotic!! A totally good day!

9. Saw the Northern Lights up close and personal. I was flying a King Air for a Utah corporation, and they wanted to go fishing in the Northwest Territory in Yellow Knife. The flight was at night, I flew single pilot and as they slept in the cabin, I was privileged to a light show in the dead of night that I will never forget!

10. While flying the corporate plane for that company, I allowed myself to be hypnotized at a property grand opening. I remember most of it, which the hypnotist said happened often. I remember thinking the audience was naked. I remember talking into my shoe. When I came out of it, it was as if I had slept for 12 hours! I was ready to party!! Darlene, it was the one time I got really plowed! I was on tequila out of the bottle before it ended. AND, I had to fly the next morning. Took a couple of bosses to a ranch outside of Teton, Wyoming. One of the stupid things I have ever done. No more Tekillya for this kid!

11. Now that I am practicing my chosen religion again, I must admit to missing good wine. I loved wine's ancient history, its sociability and history. Wine and cooking just went hand in hand. A small thing to give up tho, when compared to the providence and gifts that have saved me from myself.

12. I am also a long time beekeeper. I was the church beekeeper in East San Diego in 1980 . . . it was a welfare farm providing honey for world wide distribution. Our other welfare project was a Tuna Cannery. GUESS which one was easier to get folks to help at?? I am entranced with honey bees and their ancient history . . . the good they do in the world. We must NOT loose the honey bee. Buy some honey from your local beekeeper today! It is a sweet deal!!

13. I wanted to be an airline pilot. Never caught on with one. Closest was as a ticket agent for National Airlines. I quit when they wanted to move me to LA.

14. Managed a Fish and Chips restaurant in Chula Vista.

15. Then spent 6 years as a fireman for Chula Vista. I made great friends, and loved that job!

16. During off time for fire dept, installed linoleum floors, a trade I learned right after the Army, while looking for airline work. Got so busy that I quit the FD and ran my own business for 13 years. Building dropped off the cliff in early 80's, and moved to Utah to fly in the Oil Field. Been here ever since.

17. One hat I wear with County Government is road sign supervisor . . . always replacing stop signs that wild high school student steal errrrrrrrr borrow. Sound familiar, fellow students?

18. 3 or 4 most favorite teachers. We had a lot of great ones. Mr Adams, Mr Kniss, Mr Logston, Mr Williams.

19. In the late 70's I showed up to install a floor ( I was a sub contractor for a couple of stores Sears, Cole's Carpets etc) at an upscale condo somewhere in a beach city and to my astonishment there was Mr Adams! After quickly recalling my class performance in his mind, I am sure that Mr Adams was not at all surprised to see that my job included a blue shirt with my name on it. As we caught up on the years gone by, he told me that he was now in the Library . . . that the classroom was not as viable for him as it used to be. I hoped it was not my disappearing ink that helped to drive him away from an English classroom.

20. Always wanted a tricked out 57 Chev . . . not to be.

21. Did finally own that elusive Harley Davidson. My sweetheart and I spent wonderful times in the first couple of years together in Star Valley, Jackson, West desert, Southern Utah . . . always just us and the bike, small road houses or the like. What memories!! I was slowly healing and the two lane roads we lost ourselves on were like soothing balm.

22. We decided to sell the bike and spend our weekends including church worship. We also decided to build a Victorian style home in the inner city here, a place desperately in need of rebuilding. It is happening, slowly but surely. We are happy to be a part of it all, both in a city full of past railroad glory struggling to come back, and a congregation with many MANY needs and too few workers.

23. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are our dog of choice. http://www.millcreekvalleyfarm.com/softcoatedwheatenterriers/ We were just blessed with a litter of 6, from our Lady Cassidy of Millcreek Valley Farm.

24. I am very proud of all my children. I have a soft spot for my daughter, son-in-law and their 4 kids. Carrie joined the Navy after high school. Was trained as a combat field medic. Met and married a Marine, who now is a Navy Lt Colonel and a Chaplain. He was chosen as the Navy Chaplain of the Year in 2008 . . . such a good man! They are now living in Okinawa. He was deployed from there during their first 9 months in country, to Kuwait as head of Mortuary Affairs for the Middle East. It took it's toll on my daughter's husband, as you might well imagine. They are as of this moment on a flight stateside for a bit of a working vacation here in Utah. It has been over a year, and I cannot wait to put my arms around them and kiss their cheeks . . . tell them how much I love them.

Peace to one and all
Glen

Thank you for this wonderful way to stay in touch with each other. We can be all around the country and yet we are only a click away. I never felt real connected with too many of the class. Two of my friends didn't graduate. Then there was Marla Roessler. She and I spent a lot of time together.I remember Mary Thornton. She had a birthday party, (I think it was) and I was invited. We played Sugar,Peaches and Cream. I had my first kiss and it was with Earl Seward.mmm

25 Random Things about me
1. I love to dance. So much so, I was pregnant with my first son and still dancing. He is now a world traveler teaching Hip Hop, Popping, Waving, etc. free style dance to many different cultures. Here's my son on Youtube with his dance group at a Central Park, New York performance to Bach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6h-sK2V8Ao. He's the one with his left pant leg rolled up and comes on stage from the left side.
2. After high school and college, I went to Weaver Airline training school in Kansas City, MO for communications (teletype in those days, you know, ticker tape, before computers).
3. Was hired by Pan American World Airways in New York at the ripe old age of 19.
4. Lived with 3 roommates in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York for about a year. Then got my own apartment.
5. Partied with other airline's personnel and learned the hard way that I never wanted to be so drunk that I was totally out of control. I stopped drinking alcoholic beverages several years ago.
6. Back in the day, I danced at a few nightclubs in Manhattan, studied voice and modern jazz ballet. Did an off Broadway show and modeled briefly. Met alot of celebrities.
7. Traveled the world and met many people of different cultures. No matter where you go, we are all human beings with feelings, goals, desires, a genuine curiosity to learn from others and the capacity to love and care for one another.
8. High school was a fantastic journey for me. My parents always taught my sister and I to work hard and respect others. My hero was Dr. Lundquist. I was his assistant for 2 years and he was a wonderful teacher.
9. When I was in Drama, Keith Richards had our class do an improvisation of someone we knew. My choice was Dr. Lundquist. After much time observing him, I was able to pull it off and give the audience the gift of laughter. That was so much fun.
10. I tried out for cheerleading, but did not make it on the team at ECVHS. However, I did become a cheerleader for Grossmont College where I attended classes after graduation for about a semester.
11. My one and only granddaughter, Kaiya, is 8 years old and she is following her Grammie's footsteps and has become a cheerleader for a group called the "Dazzlers" in Escondido.
12. I loved going to all the games. I used to scream so hard every time and practically lost my voice.
13. Kathy Simms, Mike Phillips (Class of '64) and a few others from Drama class used to hang out alot. Kathy was the first to get her drivers license and we would all pile into her car and go cruising. We would scrape up all our pennys and go to Oscar's for fries or whatever we could afford. We had the best time.
14. My parents were a bit strict so I didn't get to go out on too many dates or parties.
15. I do remember the dances. These were okay when I was a Freshman because my sister was a Senior and if she went, I went. After that, I went to as many as I could.
16. Hand Corp was so much fun, too! I loved the away games, band competitions and marching in various parades. We had a great time on the buses going and coming to these events.
17. My Mother owned a Bed & Breakfast in Julian in the mid-1980's. I would drive up to help her with decorating and whatever she needed on the weekends. She was a Minister and perfomed weddings in the garden of her Bed & Breakfast. It was a nice place until she had to sell and move back to El Cajon.
18. Oh yes, there was a community group in El Cajon when I was in Junior High that formed a baton twirling group. Guess who was co-leader of this group. We marched in many parades (parades again!). I think I might have a picture or 2 of that time of my life, too.
19. I was born in Massachusetts where my family is from. Lived in a 200 year old house on 8 acres of land with my parents and sister. Our backyard was a forest. Talk about getting close to nature! I loved every minute of it.
20. I attended an old school house in Petersham, Massachusetts where the desks had the old wrought iron works on either side and ink wells. The grades were first to twelfth grade all in one school house. Yes, I even wore pig tails....
21. My parents moved us from Massachusetts in 1954 to Miami, Florida. Lived there for 3 years.
22. My parents then sold our house and bought a 25 foot trailer and we towed it across the U.S. in 1957. Saw a great deal of country. We landed in El Cajon. We were very poor then.
23. My Dad got a job at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company downtown San Diego.
24. I feel so blessed to have walked down my path and met so many great people. Especially, all my classmates/friends from the Class of 1963 at ECVHS.
25. Hope I haven't bored anyone with all this stuff. It's been fun participating. See you all at the 50th!!

Cheryle,

I enjoyed reading your 25 things and the thing we have in common is travling across the country pulling a trailer. My parents did that in the mid 50s as well. We landed in El Cajon in '57 and stayed 48 years. We moved from Ohio.

CLASS QUARTERLY

IF YOU KNOW ANYONE IN OUR SCHOOL WHO DIED IN THE MILITARY PLEASE NOTIFY US - DAVE HAS STARTED A NEW PAGE AND WE WANT TO HONOR THEM.
NEXT QUARTERLY IN JANUARY - I WISH ALL A BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON.

From Dianne Sloan Yeargan:

We had a very enjoyable trip to South Dakota during the last week of August. We did the round of mine tours, museums, old cemetery, trout hatchery, Mount Rushmore and even saw a buffalo herd. Roger Miller was correct, you can't rollerskate in a buffalo herd but you can ride in a pickup truck and provide shelter for a timid Harley Davidson rider.

From Brian Erickson:

We took our daughter Karen ( a Dr of Physical Therapy in Abilene, Texas) and her family (husband Jim and sons Jared (9) and Jacob (8)) to DisneyWorld Orlando from 16 - 23 September, staying at the Shades of Green Resort (a Disney Resort Hotel owned/operated by the US military, much like Hale Koa in Honolulu). We flew out of San Antonio--who would want to drive with six folks for two days???? We spent most of the 1st day at Animal Kingdom, one of the four main parks within the Resort, riding ALL the roller coasters (yes, even Expedition Everest—a roller coaster in the dark and VERY FAST) and the Kali River Rapids, where you're guaranteed to get REAL wet and should probably not do it early in your visit! Also saw some GREAT shows (as we did with all the Parks)--Lion King and Finding Nemo the Musical are live shows/musicals, and It's Tough to be a Bug is a "4-D" animated show. Then on to Downtown Disney to see Circque d' Soleil (sp?) show of La Nouba--if you've ever seen one of these--and there are lots all over the Country--you know how awesome these are. The "boys" loved it--well, all of us did. The 2nd day was Magic Kingdom. We saw it ALL and the boys had a great time with Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, road Pirates of the Caribbean and, yes, even It's A Small World (with a family rule that NO ONE would be singing after the ride--just kidding). Then, off to Disney's Hollywood Studios to see the night show "Fantasmic"--a very good laser, lights and special effects show with about 15,000 of our closest friends--got there 30 minutes before start time and MOST of our "friends" had arrived about an hour before us--gotta love it. The 3rd day (Saturday) was GOLF DAY with Jim and I playing the Magnolia Course (used for the PGA tour event) which is one of three courses right next door to the Shades of Green--gotta love how that worked out. Sunday, we went to Disney's Hollywood Studios to see the rest of the park--a GREAT stunt show (Lights, Motors, Action), Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular--even good for us "older" folks, watched the really good, live show "Beauty and the Beast", and rode another of the top three roller coasters--Rock 'n Roller Coaster--GREAT ride. The "kids" also did the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror--but, Kathy and I just sat in the shade with cool drinks. Then, off to Star Tours--a Star Wars flight simulator--and Journey into Narnia: Prince Caspian. Hollywood Studios is the smallest of the four main parks, but has lots of stuff to do, see and visit. then, off to the Magic Kingdom for the nite parade. Monday was EPCOT where the big rides were Soarin'--a VR ride on a hang glider over California, Mission SPACE where you are the astronauts--can be very intense so choose the Green Team which has a milder mission profile, and Test Track where you are riding a GM vehicle through the longest, fastest attraction in all of Disney. On a smoother note, The Seas with Nemo and Friends was good and we ALL had a great time at Turtle Talk with Crush--an awesomely interactive show, dude..........After the rides and stuff we went into the World Showcase portion of EPCOT and settled in to watch the evening--Illuminations was a great show but finding a good vantage point (as it was at Magic Kingdom) is the secret to viewing the show. Tuesday was "go away and play" day--Kathy and I cut the "kids" loose to go/do whatever--there were a couple things we wanted to do or see again and we did. The "kids" returned to the room around 1100 pm--glad we didn't go with THEM. That was a great vacation--we came home Wednesday tired, happy, broke, and with a combined 1500+ photos to edit. Some of them will probably be on the WEB sometime. (ed.note: - - I edited this a little and Brian had no idea I’d print so much but his telling of the trip was so funny I couldn’t resist and now I expect many pictures on our website!)

From Kathy Sims Robinson:

John (grandson) and I had a wonderful summer. We went camping up to Fall Creek where he caught his first fish. It was big enough for us to have for dinner. I took a weeks vacation and we went over to the Oregon coast to camp for a week. It was just beautiful and only rained a couple of times LOL. Typical Oregon, our four seasons here tend to be Rainy, cold and rainy, really rainy. Construction. The Oregon coast is one of the few places where you can hike for an hour in the mountains and end up on the beach. We also did a couple of pow wows, one on the Selitz reservation and one in the Grand ronde. Had a lot of fun painting my house with my seven year old grandson. Ended the summer with the joy of getting a second grader ready to start school. John went back to regular school this year and so far has been doing ok. He is still having a little trouble keeping focused but thinking a small adjustment to his meds will help (he is ADHD). I have really enjoyed visiting the class page, thank you Dave and friends for all of your hard work. Here’s one for you Dave. You might be living in the NorthWest if you got up in the dark and you went to bed when it got dark and you were only up for 8 hours.
Looking forward to 50
Kathy

From Shirley Hansen Watson:

Well, we started the summer off by going to Mesa and Prescott, AZ in June. My brother, Jim, and his wonderful wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The entire living family was there including my niece from Japan. We enjoyed seeing everyone. Then the end of August we went back to Casper, WY to visit family and friends and did some genealogy research along the way. That was very rewarding. Checked out the Black Hills again this trip and just did some much needed R&R. Next trip is mid September but it will only be a long weekend in northeastern Kansas before my husband goes back to the WWII Memorial on the Honor Flight. He is going as a guardian angel to help with some of the guys that need help. Anyway, busy, funsummer that has come to an end too soon. In August we took another trip back to Wyoming and did some more work on my mother's family search. Actually found two living second cousins there. Just got back from a four day trip to northern Kansas, but not to do genealogy this time. Attended a conference that was terrific. First one I have ever been to that I didn't feel was a total waste of time. Fall is here. Temperatures are most pleasant and our pumpkin patch is going great. My husband has pictures on Facebook, if you are interested. He harvested one the other day that weighed around 190 pounds. I stay busy in my store and with all my civic projects. Life is good!

From Dave Salyers:

We, us, the class of 1963 have a brand new web site! We can talk express our opinion on issues from family to national matters and have fun playing games listed on one of the pages and MUCH more. We (at this writing) have 32 active site members and are looking for many more! (ed. Note – we now have about 73+). My family is healthy and Jared is doing well in school and making friends. He has been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome along with his other problems. It sounds serious and can be but is mild in his case. It is the inability to make friends and to know what is appropriate to say and do in social situations. We ask for your prayers for him and also for the sale of our house. We are very fortunate to not to be in a situation where we need to sell but we would like to move closer to our church as our activities center around there. I have Tues. morning prayer time with the men and then choir practice on Wed. church services on Sun. and then practice for the plays that we put on three times a year. Over 4,000 miles last year on the car and then our doctor and dentist are in Prescott as well. Martha is working for a local accounting firm but would like to get a job where she can work from home so she is looking into that. If anyone has suggestions for the web site be sure to let me know. Dave

From Dave Wexler:

Ok! Here is a pic of me. Can anyone identify this clown? (ed note: see attached) I am of the class of '63. My date at the senior prom was May Pickett. I was in the ROTC and Mr. Q's class all 4 years. I just finished Vacation Bible School at church here and my name is Happy Pappy ****. I tied up the MC with my magic ribbon and did a paper tear titled: You can't get to Heaven on someone else's ticket. I was one of two who took Algebra in the Sr. year against Dr. Lundquist's advice. I finished with a B+. I remember Dr. Lundquist, Mr. Bascom, and Val-Spinosa as well as Mr. Q. for my teachers. We had a great class of '63. I loved the band and those who performed theatrically. I believe there was so much talent in our class, I wish I could remember everyone. Dave

Karen and Mike Booth:

Well, Karen and Mike Booth finally have news. After 45 years of marriage, we are finally going to be grandparents. Our son Rob and his wife Katie are expecting in March of 2010. They have been married almost 6 years, so we are all very excited. Mike, and son Brian went fishing in Alaska in July. They brought home 200 lbs. of salmon and halibut. Our friends and family are happy because we obviously didn't have enough freezer space.

From Abby Kirk (Joyce Acton):

Nearing Fifty Years

At that bright threshold in Sixty-Three,
How could we ever have foreseen
All of the changes we'd live to see,
Shaking our trust in all things routine ?

Men walked on the moon. The Berlin Wall fell.
Songs of hope had new refrains.
Countries whose names we could hardly spell
Established themselves as new domains.

Women In Charge became the norm
(heads of households, Heads of State;
Magistrates, police in uniform) -
We serve, we organize, we create.

Science and the arts acquired new shapes
(some a bit scary, some sublime).
Paintings transcended mere landscapes --
And we learned a new word: "Paradigm."

A little item named "microchip"
Turned the astonished world inside-out
With new technology - what a trip!
And all from that little micro-sprout!

Old racial barriers fell away.
The Soviet Union ceased to be.
The world was often in great disarray
(as it is still, most grievously).

Some of us have gone to jail
For issues we simply could not ignore,
As humankind, strong but ever frail,
Has witnessed war - more war - and more.

We the living bear witness to
Enormous changes on every side:
Amazed by what we thought we knew,
We search the nooks where Truth may hide.

Here's to the search. It keeps us all
Alert to what we feel and see,
Lending us each the wherewithal
To know and love humanity.

From Hazel Seward Montague:

Well, the summer has come and I can't believe I've been in my new home for nearly 7 months. I love it and really enjoy having my own place, doing anything I want (as the landlord told me I could) and trying my hand at gardening. Not that I'm a green thumb, but it's fun with my little yard space. Of course you know for me that the worst in the past few months was losing Patti, not long after losing Terry. It's been tough, and I don't think the reality of it has really sunk in. But, Praise God, they are with Him and probably dancing around like crazy!
I am enjoying my family, especially the grand kids. I have been helping Sandi out with picking the kids up after school, so I see them nearly everyday. Dustin helps me out with all my electronic and computer stuff, since I know so much (ha, ha) and washes my car for me. Of course I pay him what I would at the car wash!! I also help Lori out when she needs me to pick up her kids too. Being with my friends, my sister and brother are a blessing. Out to lunch or dinner, shopping, doing errands and just doodling around, besides doing things around here, keep me busier than I have been in years. I sleep good at night tho!!! Kids are growing way too fast, as I know you all know how that goes. Dustin is a Senior, and Jessica started High School. When she had her JH graduation I was so proud of her. She was all dressed up and was beautiful. Oh my, where do the years go?????? Torrin is in CYT (Christian Youth Theater) with their after school program and his plays are great fun. Haylee is in plays at her school, and also through PLAY, which is the Lakeside Theater group, and her plays are wonderful. She is now in CYT at the Performing Arts Center and works backstage in the crew and loves it. She will be going to Drama Camp this summer. Hunter is quite the sportsman, and is active in Baseball, Soccer and golf. So, I'm going to practices, plays and games with the kids. I have a new grand niece, and Dustin's girlfriend, Ashley, is like a new addition to our family, as she is so special. Went to Montana to visit my daughter, Debbie and their new place with 20 acres! Absolutely beautiful! Still working on Reunion stuff, and doing some preliminary searching to get ready to hit it hard, as I am determined to find the 36 or 37 people we still can't find. It's unreal to think that we are heading towards our 50th. That just can't be!!!! Darlene and I will be jumping in full force!!! Thank you all for your emails, and for your prayer support and your wonderful comments during the time Patti was so ill. You all mean so much to me, and I treasure the friendships we have made. I am so blessed. Love to you all, Hazel

From Jim Edwards:

Have become un-stuck from the stress of keeping a schedule answering to a boss, commuting and am now experiencing the BLISS of “maybe I’ll get to it tomorrow, if I want to, or maybe not life style. Northern Mexico has a comfort and lifestyle that I didn’t know existed until landing here, and now my roots are growing deep, very quickly.

From Ralph and Pam (Provost) Speake:
We have a beautiful new great grandson, Colton Speake, born on January 22, 2009.They live too far away -Parker, Colorado. We just think he is the very cutest little guy and has our hearts!

From Darlene:

Like Hazel, I am still trying to adjust to the loss of dear Terry and Patti. Our first reunion meeting without Patti was very hard to deal with. But we will all do our best to make our 50th the best ever – just like we promised Patti. Thank you all for the love, prayers and thoughts during this time - it is so appreciated. A busy summer here – my granddaughter, Jewel, graduated from high school, as well as my great niece, and another great niece got married in June unless we have too many attachements). Lots of fun family time together – which means never a dull moment! The time goes by so quickly and I treasure each moment God has blessed me with on this earth. In April my Thyroid and I parted company and in May I visited my son and family in Illinois. August we went with my daughter, DeAnna and granddaughter, Jewel, to Disney Theme Parks in FL (Brian said it all for me LOL) and then on a cruise on Disney to Nassau – swam with the Dolphins and then to the Disney Island. The month of September – I was in Illinois again for about a month. Watched the kids while mom and dad went to watch SC beat Ohio State and stayed for a while. Had a great time and my son treated me to a mom/son day out. Oct. 11th we are going to watch NASCAR in Fontana – under the blanket of my son’s companys sponsorship – Pit Passes/Garage passes and a ride in a NASCAR – car and hopefully get to meet our own Jimmy Johnson – who knows. We are leaving the end of this month for Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa to visit my son – I know again – and stepson and family (WI) and grandkids in Iowa. And of course working on reunion, adding stuff to the website and enjoying getting to see many of you at our local get togethers. This class – what can I say. You are amazing! Thank you for just being you! BTW – I honestly wish there were a rule that says: adult children may not move away! Love you all to pieces, Darlene

Hazel Seward Montague

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know that I found one of our unlocated......Bonnie Neutzling! Yeah. She is living in Turlock, CA and doing well. Had a nice chat with her. She doesn't have a email, but if anyone knew her and would like to get in touch with her, I can send you her info. Didn't sound like she had many friends in school, and hasn't stayed in touch with anyone, so maybe a note or a call from someone would spark her interest.

So, we have 40 yet to find on our Unlocated list. Again, please look it over, and see if you might know anything at all about a classmate listed there and let me know.

Love ya,

Hazel......(Still determined to find them all!!)

LIFE AS A TEENAGER IN THE 60'S

Being naive is sometimes a blessing. I didn't know if there were bad things going on, so therefore my teenage years were pretty wonderful. I was happy and blessed. Oh, of course there were things that made me sad. My parents were acholholics, my brother ran away once. But overall I was a well adjusted teenager. Can't say to much about being a well adjusted "Senior" tho!!!! Ha, ha. I loved being in High School, and loved and got along with my teachers. I had wonderful friends and was involved enough to keep me busy. Went to the games, the dances, the parties, joined the clubs like Annual Staff and Girls League and experienced relationships and breakups. I was in Jobs Daughters, was a Princess in the Mother Goose Parade, Girl Scouts, Square dancing and church. Went to camp every year. Didn't smoke or drink or do drugs.......didn't even know what they were, and for the most part, obeyed my parents. Tho I was pulled over by a cop once when Darlene and I and my sister were on our way to a Jobs Daughters dinner at Pernie's. Followed us all the way through El Cajon, before he stopped me and said that my car and the three of us matched a description just sent out of people involved with drugs! Who, us????? NOT!!!! I think who I am today, was sculptured by the lessons I learned as a teenager. I thank God for everything good and bad in my life. The good gives me structure and the bad helps me to grow.............which is an ongoing thing. What is that saying......"Be patient with me, God isn't finished with me yet". Thank goodness. He started with me as a baby, and will stop when I reach my Home in Heaven. We never stop growing and learning and our experiences from our young years have taught me to live in the present and fondly remember the "Good Ole' Days".

The best part of growing up in the 60's. When we were in high school we were safe - no fear of violence. No gangs, no pressure as to "what label clothes/shoes" you were wearing. Having a good relationship - by and large - with our teachers - they were not the enemy. We were there for each other without judgement. We had good clean fun (compared to now) - our music was great, we had FUN - we had the football games, and Oscars, Thriftys, Mels and we laughed a lot. Oh of course we had the normal teen worries: dates, grades, "do I look ok?" but WE NEVER HAD A THOUGHT ABOUT NOT BEING SAFE! And our cars - wow they were amazing and of course the guys loved to show off their wheels. What was great? Friendship!

ok - I'm done!

Pam Provost Speake

Hi to all my loving and faithful classmates! I want to exten my thanks and that of all my family to all of you who offered prayers for my mom, Millie. The power of prayer is so obvious, because her surgery was called off at the last minute, because they must have seen that there was some change indicating she could heal on her own without the surgery. The bowel problem has taken care of itself, but the kidney problem persists. It was the lack of kidney function, coupled with her age, which posed the most serious risk during surgery. My neice works in the gastro dept. at Kaiser, and one of the doctors she works with told her that of the patients he treats with the same problems, in her age group, only 3% survive the surgery. Had she gone into surgery, who knows what her odds would have been? But through the power of prayer, the surgeon made the right decision, and we have her with us today!Thank you again to all of you wonderful prayer warriors, and praise and thanksgiving to God!

I love you all, Pam (Provost)Speake

Dave, Thanks so much for the New Year post. Nice reflection.
OK. Here's the best I can do on the 25.
1)Felt rather shy and awkward place in High School. Spent alot of time watching others to see how to be rather than just be.
2)Was desperately afraid of oral reports and got sent to Dr Lundquist for evaluation. Led to me being very cautious around everyone else's favorite teacher. No matter how many of you said he was a stand up guy, I remained that way; yet was very sorry to see him go.
3)He did the greatest thing for me in sending me to Mrs. Brooks. There I learned to speak the words of great authors and to think out loud. With her I went on a life changing trip to Santa Barbara. Speech and Debate would at San Diego State send me all over the country, teach me the wonderful game of bridge (I no longer know anyone who plays just for fun and probably do well without the gin and bridgemix(;)and introduce me to the theater and acting.
4)My favorite teacher was Mr Logsdon. I loved that class his manner and all the people in it.
5)I loved the biology teacher no one else liked. She became a mentor in the sense that she instilled in me a life long love of research, science and rigor.
6)Just adored Glenn Parks' smile and hi-jinks. Wished I had the spirit to do such things.
7)Dave, Jerry Hendrix and the car guys always intrigued me and I wondered what it was like to work on cars and dash around like that. They were always laughing.
8)I thought Mike Booth the handsomest, Mike Acord the sweetest and most thoughtful, and Jimmy Walters the most fun. We had a great time going to prom together and making fun of it at the same time.
9)Alan Guliani always intrigued me because he seemed so centered and free from the teenage anxst I felt.
10)I hung out with Carol Holland and Sonia Nordenson we did so many silly things. Remeber pretending to be french? I loved Donna Hawk too.
11)I love to swim.
12)I will always be grateful to Joyce Pierson and her family for the parties at her house. I had the best warmest times there.
13)The only PE I liked was basketball and still love to watch it. Played beach volleyball for awhile in my 30's and 40's. Not very good, specialized in having a good time, serving and setup. Rosarita beach was a good tournament with Mexican margaritas my favorite because they have the right amount of alcohol, nearly none.
14)Music tastes run the gamut from classical (Vivaldi, Bach, Telemann...) to aborginal drums. I like the newest tunes on the radio and delight in great guitar, Pat Metheny, Peter Blue, Ottmar Leibert, Chet Atkins, Satriani).
15 Married in 1965 to a great guy I met on the debate team, had 4 wonderful kids. Divorced in 1979 and returned to school at UCI for my education. Got into theater and dance as hobbies.
16. Lived in the Wilderness in a 12X24ft. cabin with three kids for three kids. Grew our own food. Loved being my own lights water and power. After 18 months began to see and make friends with the other beings in the woods. Especially bobcats, herons and a puma family.
17. Return to Irvine, worked in a 4 star french restarant, became a somlier and learned love fine food. (can cook a little too(:)
18. Worked several other jobs too top secrect clearance accounting for an electronics firm that created missle guidance systems, office manager for a mercedes shop. Loved my old yellow '76 to 400K miles which we called the yellow submarine. I now drive a camry, great but not fine german engineering.
19. Opened my school for young kids in 1989 in order to stay home and care for my handicapped daughter and have near looked back carreer wise. find me at asthetwigisbent.org
20. Went to my first reunion at the 25 or 30 and remet so many old friends and was so happy to see you all!
21. The last reubnion was a blast and so wonderful to see and talk with especially Bev Brandon, Joyce, Hazel, Donna Williams, Darlene, Rick, Ceasar Sanudo..heck the whole crown. So much fun dancing. A man that will dance can't be beat.
22. My experience with little kids and especially the challenged ones has led me to create programs for ADD, Autism, Rhetts Syndrome, Emotional disturbance, Cerebral Pasley and other challenges. now creating parenting program for new parents that I hope will help to change the way children are understood and managed.
23. Can't think of anything else and the grandkids are here to play with (my every sunday delight). Except to say I miss living off the grid so much that if I ever retire it will be back to the peace and serenity of the virgin forest near water, though I have to admit the music, art and family and friends in my life now are the best!
24. I love movies and history, biography, fiction, brain research and social science to relax and learn with.
25. I wish you all the best year in 2010. Glad we're out of the zero's.
